LAHORE: The Punjab government has introduced a major digital reform by making online payment of property tax mandatory across the province under the Budget 2026-27.
Under the new policy, property owners will no longer be able to pay property taxes through manual or cash-based methods. Instead, all payments will be processed exclusively through digital channels, including online banking and other approved electronic platforms.
The move is aimed at improving transparency, enhancing efficiency in tax collection, and reducing opportunities for corruption and revenue leakage.
Officials said the decision builds on the success of Punjab’s digital vehicle token tax system, which already allows taxpayers to make payments through online banking platforms without visiting government offices.
According to the provincial government, the shift to mandatory online payments is part of a broader strategy to modernize revenue administration and promote digital governance across Punjab.
Authorities believe the reform will simplify the tax payment process, reduce administrative costs, and ensure greater accountability in the collection of public revenues.
To encourage taxpayer participation, the government has also announced a 5 percent discount on property tax for owners who assess their properties under the newly introduced self-assessment scheme.
Officials expect that the combination of self-assessment and mandatory digital payments will boost voluntary compliance, expand the tax base, and improve overall property tax collection in the province.
The latest initiative marks another step in Punjab’s efforts to digitize public services and create a more efficient, transparent, and taxpayer-friendly revenue system.
