Qatar’s Nebras-supported solar power plant in Jordan to be operational in 2016

DOHA: Qatar’s Nebras-supported solar power plant project in Jordan will be fully operational in 2016. Nebras Power with its partners Diamond Generating Europe and Kawar Group held a ground breaking ceremony in Amman Jordan on Monday 8 June for its Shams Ma’an Solar power plant project with capacity of 52.5MW.

Nebras Power, the Qatari shareholding company, owns 35 percent of the project, while DGE owns 35 percent and Kawar Group owns 30 percent.

The ceremony was held in the presence of Prime Minister of Jordan Dr Abdullah Ensour and the attendance of Princess Sumiah Alhassan and a number of ministers and high ranking official and distinguished guests. Nebras Power was represented by its Chairman  Fahad Al Mohannadi and Chief Executive Officer Khaldi Jolo.

Nebras Power along with its partners will construct the project in 16 months as the project is planned to complete construction activities and start commercial operation in September 2016, a regulatory filing to Qatar Exchange (QE) noted yesterday.

The project’s importance comes from being one of the first renewable energy projects and the largest of its kind in Jordan.  Shams Ma’an Power Generation company has already signed a 20 years power purchase agreement with National Electric & Power Company of Jordan and also signed an engineering, procurement and construction contract and operation & maintenance contract with First Solar of USA.

Nebras Power QSC was founded in 2014 as a Qatari shareholding company in accordance with the State of Qatar laws, as partnership between the Qatar Electricity and Water Company QSC 60 percent, and Qatar Petroleum International Limited 20 percent, and Qatar Holding 20  percent.

The authorised paid capital of Nebras Power is QR3.6bn, and the company is investing globally in new and existing projects, or through the acquisition of power generation and water desalination and   processing projects, as well as cooling and heating projects. Nebras will also invest in the LNG terminal and fuel loading and unloading facilities connected to the projects.
