KARACHI: Sindh Minister for Information Sharjeel Inam Memon has said Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah has approved Rs 3.5 billion for purchase of fire tenders as the provincial capital was facing shortage of fire tenders and snorkels.

In a statement issued on Saturday, he said that all the official formalities for purchase of fire tenders have been completed but the court has issued stay against the purchase of fire tenders.

“We want to purchase fire tenders of small size so that they could enter into the narrow streets,” he added. The provincial information minister said that the promise made to the affected families of Timber Market have been fulfilled to some extend. “We have released Rs 9 million to 90 families. This means Rs 100,000 have been given to each family purely for their day-to-day expenditures. The assessment of the losses to the shopkeepers in the Timber Market is in progress,” he said, adding that they would also be compensated as soon as the assessment work was completed.

Sharjeel Memon reiterated the commitment of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) government that it would not leave the people of Sindh at the time of need. Quoting Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah, the information minister said that he has urged Qasim Siraj Teli, a leading businessman, to get the assessment of the losses at the earliest so that the business community of the Timber Market could be rehabilitated.
