Russia:The border guards in Transbaikalia, Russia, blocked an attempt to illegally transport gold worth more than 1.2 million rubles ($17.8m) on the border between Russia and China, the press service of the Customs Dept of the Federal Security Service of Russia told reporters on Tuesday.
“Gold consignment weighing more than 600 grams with an estimated value of more than 1.2 million rubles was discovered by the officers of the border control Zabaikalsk during an inspection of a train No. 20 Moscow-Beijing,” the Department reported.
Officers found a 56-year-old Chinese citizen in a compartment of the train where the gold was hidden; he denies any involvement in the incident. Smugglers used a square metal tube attached to a television with a magnet as a stash.
“Details of the crime are being clarified, the question of initiating a criminal case is being decided,” the Department added.
