SHC seek remarks from tax authorities on bail pleas of suspects in Rs 160m sales tax fraud case

KARACHI: The Sindh High Court ( SHC ) has given last and final chance to the tax authorities and deputy attorney general on bail applications of suspects, Syed Muhammad Khalid, Muhammad Amin and Imran Ahmed Qureshi, who are allegedly involved in a case of sales tax fraud of Rs 160 million.

A single bench comprising Justice Muhammad Iqbal Kalhoro was hearing the applications.

During the hearing, neither the special prosecutor nor deputy attorney general were present in the court. The court observed that “on last date of hearing Younus Inayat had held brief on behalf of Mohsin Imam, special prosecutor customs authority and this case was adjourned with the observation that no further adjournment would be granted. In the circumstances, as a last chance this matter is adjourned to 17/08/2016 “.

It needs to be mentioned here that after the cancelation of bail applications by Customs Court Judge Syed Faiz Rasool Rashdi, accused have approached the Sindh High Court (SHC) for bail. Counsel for the applicants / accused submitted that accused persons have falsely implicated in this case.

According to the prosecution, accused persons were doing illegal business of issuing fake / bogus sales tax invoices. FIR no 01/2014 was registered by Directorate of Intelligence & Investigation – Inland Revenue under section 2 ( 37 ) of the Sales Tax Act, 1990.
