SIALKOT: The Customs Preventive staff recovered 64 smuggled mobile phones from a passenger at Sialkot International Airport Limited (SIAL). The market price of the seized mobile phones is Rs 1.2 million.
A passenger named Mudassar Tufail son of Muhammad Tufail arrived at Sialkot airport form Sharjah. The customs officials intercepted him and recovered 64 cell phones from his luggage.
The passenger was asked to show documents regarding customs clearance of the cell phones but he could not produce the same. He revealed that his cousin, Ahmad, handed him over the mobile phones in Sharjah and offered him Rs 1,000 per set for their delivery to his brother.
Therefore, the Customs Preventive staff confiscated 64 mobile phones worth Rs 1.2 million under the customs laws; however, accused passenger was released after interrogation.
Siakot Customs Assistant Collector Fahad Bashir said that a case will be registered and sent to the adjudication department for further legal action. He added that the seized cell phones will be auctioned if case is decided in favour of the department.
He also said that the performance of Customs Preventive and Anti Smuggling Organisation (ASO) was improving, as numbers of smuggling attempts have been foiled in new fiscal year 2016-17.
