SINGAPORE: A cardboard box containing items firecrackers was uncovered by Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) officers in the car boot of a Malaysia-registered car here the other day. At about 11.20pm, ICA officers had stopped the car driven by a male Malaysian at the Tuas Checkpoint for a routine check.
ICA said a total of 24 strips of firecrackers and two small boxes with 18 “Boom” firecrackers each were seized. The seized items were listed as prohibited items under the Dangerous Fireworks Act (Cap 72), it said.
According to ICA, the driver and the seized items have been referred to the police for further investigation. If convicted, the 33-year-old is liable to imprisonment for at least six months and punished with caning with not more than 6 strokes.
ICA also said it will “continue to conduct security checks on passengers and vehicles at the checkpoints to prevent attempts to smuggle in undesirable persons, drugs, weapons, explosives and other contrabands.”
“Our borders are our first line of defence in safeguarding Singapore’s security. The security checks are critical to our nation’s security,” it added.
