MADRID: Sales of new cars in Spain rose by 12.5 percent in the first five months of the year when compared with the same period of a year earlier, according to data released on Wednesday by Spain’s automobile industry organizations.

According to the Association of Car Manufacturers (ANFAC), the Federation of Association of Dealers of the Automotive sector (FACONAUTO) and the Association of Car Dealers (GANVAM), a total of 499,444 new cars were sold from January to May.

Firms bought 130,948 units in the period, which meant a 14.3 percent increase year-on-year, while individuals bought 242,744 units, which meant 15.2 percent more than a year earlier.

In May alone, a total of 113,671 cars were sold, which meant a 20.9 percent rise year-on-year. It was the best May since 2008, the organizations pointed out, emphasizing that sales are being boosted by private consumption and good expectations about tourism for the summer.

David Barrientos, from the communication department at ANFAC, highlighted that “the first five months of the year mark an average of 100,000 units per month, something that did not happen since 2008”.
