Swedish telecoms equipment giant Ericsson to cut 71 jobs in Dublin

DUBLIN: Swedish telecoms equipment giant Ericsson is to reduce its workforce in Dublin by 71.

The cuts follow the company’s decision a week ago to cut 2,200 jobs in Sweden as part of a cost-cutting measure aimed at saving around US$1bn.Ericsson is understood to be implementing a voluntary redundancy programme at its offices in Clonskeagh.

Ericsson employs 1,500 people in Ireland and last year announced 120 jobs at its Athlone site.Speaking with Siliconrepublic.com during the recent Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, country manager Traoloch Collins said the company’s Irish workforce is focused on developing the next generation of 5G and internet of things technologies.

He described the latest announcement as part of Ericsson’s ongoing  transformation as an ICT company.

We remain committed to Ireland as a strategic location for R&D and professional services. We employ over 1,500 people in Ireland. We expect to make further investments in these areas over the coming years in both Athlone and Dublin.  Our priority today is our employees affected by  the  announcement.”
