TAIPEI: Taiwan stocks rose 1.4 per cent to a more-than-seven-year intraday high, led by financial services firms and heavyweights, as the market joined an upward move by other regional bourses on Thursday.
At 0215 GMT, the main TAIEX index had jumped to 9,747.68 points, extending a 0.8 per cent gain in the prior session.
Among the biggest winners, the financial sub-index surged 3.6 per cent and electronics sub-index was up 1.1 per cent.
TSMC, the world’s top contract chip maker and Taiwan’s most heavily-weighted share, rose 2.1 per cent. Cathay Financial, the island’s biggest financial holding firm, rallied 4.1 per cent.
The Taiwan dollar climbed 0.087 percent to stand at T$31.086 to the US dollar.
