KARACHI: The Special Court of Customs Taxation and Anti-Smuggling issued notice to the customs prosecutor on the bail confirmation plea of two suspects in a case pertaining to duty and tax evasion of Rs 5.62 million through mis-declaration.
Judge Syed Faiz Rasool Rashdi had taken up the application filed by Muhammad Ali and Naveed seeking confirmation of their interim bails.
According to the prosecution, M/s Mass International imported a consignment, containing used trousers, blankets and zipper jackets, and sought its release vide GD KAPE-HC-155897 on June 6. The importer paid the upfront taxes of the entire consignment amounting to Rs 96,568. The deputy collector became suspicious about the origin of the goods and ordered its examination.
On physical examination the goods consisting of baby frocks, polyester vest for girls/ladies, viscose, printed shirts, trousers and shorts of Indian origin were found. The importer M/s Mass International attempted
to import restricted/dutiable goods of Indian origin under the guise of used cloths.
This deliberate attempt of mis-declaration deprived national exchequer of its legitimate revenue to the tune of Rs 5.62 millions. An FIR was registered against importer Muhammad Shahid, and his accomplices Muhammad Ali and Naveed.
Earlier, the court had imposed a penalty of Rs200, 000 on Shahid and ordered his release when he pleaded guilty to the offence.
