SAN DIEGO: U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the San Ysidro port of entry found a fuel tank within a pickup truck filled with almost 150 pounds of liquid methamphetamine.
“Although it is unusual for us to find liquid methamphetamine, it is becoming a more common occurrence in recent years,” said Pete Flores, Director of Field Operations for CBP in San Diego. “Even more unusual is finding such a large amount. I’m proud of the vigilant officers who stopped this from entering our communities.”
At about 11:30 a.m. on Oct. 27, a man arrived at the border crossing driving a 1994 Ford F-250 XL pick-up truck. During his inspection, the CBP officer noticed the driver exhibiting signs of nervousness, and referred the car and driver aside for a more intensive inspection.
A CBP officer with a human/narcotic detector dog screened the vehicle, and the canine alerted to the undercarriage near the front fuel tank.
While the rear fuel tank contained fuel for the vehicle, the front fuel tank was filled with liquid methamphetamine.
In total, CBP officers recovered 149.67 pounds of liquid methamphetamine from the tank.
CBP officers seized the pickup truck and narcotics and turned the driver over the agents with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Homeland Security Investigations.
The driver, a 31-year-old male U.S. citizen, was arrested and booked into the Metropolitan Correctional Center to face federal charges.
In fiscal year 2014, CBP officers along the California border with Mexico seized 14,732 pounds of methamphetamine.
