COAL TOWNSHIP: A Northumberland County corrections officer has been charged with trying to smuggle drugs and contraband into a state prison, according to Pennsylvania State Police reports.
Damond L. Johnson, 41, is charged with possession with intent to deliver and the introduction of contraband. Johnson worked for the State Correctional Institute (SCI) in Coal Township located along the first block of Kelley Drive in Coal Township for approximately two years.
He was arrested Tuesday at the state prison after an employee manning the metal detector was alerted to suspicious items in Johnson’s possession. Johnson was searched and employees found three packages of marijuana, investigators said.
He admitted during an interview with investigators that he planned to give the marijuana to prisoners housed on the east compound, according to state police reports.
He was arraigned and taken to Snyder County Prison in lieu of $100,000 bail.
The investigation is ongoing between the SCI Coal Township Security Office and Pennsylvania State Police.
