BEIJING: An industry group fears that Vietnam’s increasing seafood exports to China could harm the country in case of a sudden downturn if other markets are ignored, tuoitrenews.vn has reported.
The Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) said that while exports to several foreign markets such as the US and the European Union fell 15 to 60% compared with the same period in 2014, Chinese exports rose by 19% during the same period.
As China accepts seafood exports that would be considered “substandard” by other countries’ food safety regulators, the VASEP worries that if the Chinese market were to close suddenly, Vietnamese catchers and processors would experience a sharp downturn.
