Weekly inflation falls 0.42pc

ISLAMABAD: The Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI)-based weekly inflation for the week ended on June 4 witnessed a decrease of 0.42pc, Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) reported on Friday.

The weekly SPI for the combined consumption group was recorded at 127.78 points, as against 128.32 points registered in the previous week.

The weekly SPI with base year 2015-16 covers 17 urban centres and 51 essential items for all expenditure groups.

The SPI for the lowest consumption group, up to Rs17,732, however, witnessed a nominal increase of 0.07pc, from 134.20 points in the last week to 134.30 points during the week under review.

Meanwhile, weekly inflation for consumption groups from Rs17,733-Rs22,888; Rs22,889-Rs29,517; Rs29,518-Rs44,175 and above Rs44,175 per month decreased by 0.02pc, 0.11pc, 0.24pc and 0.67pc, respectively.

During the week, prices of 12 items increased, 15 items decreased while that of 24 items remained unchanged.

The items that recorded a decrease in their average prices included onions, petrol, tomatoes, garlic, potatoes, LPG cylinder, pulse (gram, moong, maash, masoor), bananas, and sugar.

The commodities that recorded an increase in their average prices included eggs, chillies, wheat flour, energy saver, chicken, cooked beef, milk, curd, mutton, mustard oil, lawn, diesel, rice (basmati broken), gur and beef.

Similarly, commodities with no change in their prices included rice (Irri 6/9), bread, milk (powdered), cooking oil, vegetable ghee (both tin and loose), salt, tea (packet), cooked daal, tea (prepared), cigarettes, long cloth, shirting, georgette, gents sandal, gents chappal, ladies sandal, electricity charges, gas charges, firewood, washing soap, matchbox, telephone charges and toiled soap.
