LAHORE: Wheat and flour prices have surged again in Punjab, causing concern for both consumers and officials. The price of wheat in the open market has reached Rs3,100 per 40kg. This marks a sharp rise of Rs700 per 40kg in just 15 days, according to the Flour Mills Association.

In response, the Punjab government has decided to release official wheat supplies into the market. Officials hope this step will help stabilize prices. The government plans to offer wheat at a controlled rate of Rs2,900 per 40kg. The Food Department said market intervention is necessary to avoid further price hikes.

Meanwhile, flour prices are also rising rapidly. The price of a 20kg flour bag increased by up to Rs300 in just one week. The Flour Mills Association confirmed this trend in a recent statement. People across Punjab are struggling with the added cost of daily essentials.

The issue is not limited to Punjab alone. Flour prices have climbed across the country. In the last week, a 20kg bag rose by Rs217 on average nationwide. Cities like Karachi and Islamabad are facing the highest flour prices in the country.

According to the Federal Bureau of Statistics, Sialkot saw the biggest increase, with a Rs217 rise in just one week. Lahore, Gujranwala, Multan, and Bannu also recorded a jump of Rs200 per bag. The government now faces pressure to act quickly and protect consumers from further inflation.
