CANADA: It appears the Pacific’s famous white whale has a touch of wanderlust.
A sighting in the Cook Strait over the weekend prompted speculation that another albino humpback may have been discovered.
The Southern Cross University’s professor Peter Harrison was asked to compare images, and came to the conclusion that it was in fact Migaloo.
“By comparing the shape of the dorsal fin it does indeed appear that the white whale spotted through the Cook Strait in New Zealand is in fact Migaloo,” he said.
“So that’s quite exciting, because as far as I’m aware that’s the first time that Migaloo has been sighted in New Zealand waters.
“Migaloo usually would have come through along the east coast about now, so he’s going to arrive a couple of weeks later than he often does along the east coast.
“But it’s great to see yet another record of Migaloo, and there’s absolutely no cause for concern that he’s in New Zealand.”
