Customs court extends remand of alleged tax evader

LAHORE: The Special Federal Court of Customs Taxation and Ant-Smuggling has approved a 14-day judicial remand of a suspect, Muhammad Arif, in sales tax evasion.

Sources told Customs Today that Muhammad Arif son of Muhammad Sain was involved in sales tax evasion in his retails business. The accused was arrested by the Federal Board of revenue (FBR) Intelligence team of Sialkot when they found a huge difference in sale record of his company and statements that he showed to the government.

Intelligence sources of FBR found a difference of sales tax in Rs 15 million. After confirmation he was booked by the team of FBR Sialkot and then produced before the court for more investigation.

Earlier the Customs court on request of the FBR team approved four days physical remand of the accused and now the court has sent him to jail on judicial remand of 14 days.

Sources also informed that a cheque of Rs 2.2 million that he paid to FBR Sialkot also bounced form bank because of no cash in that account. FBR has registered a case of sales tax evasion and fraud under Pakistan sales tax act of 1990.
