Cargo clearance at Karachi Port picks up pace to meet 25th deadline

KARACHI: Importers have started clearing consignments to avoid auctioning of unclear cargo remaining by 25 December.

The clearance of goods has gained pace with eight days remaining in the end of December 25 deadline given by the Model Customs Collectorate of Appraisement-East to hundreds of importers and customs agents vide a notice dated December 10. The importers/clearing agents were informed that their import cargoes would be auctioned if not cleared by deadline.

Sources in the Appraisement-East said that the clearing of imported cargoes has gained momentum in the Karachi Port that come under the jurisdiction of the collectorate.

The collectorate has deputed additional relevant customs staff for the expeditious clearance of the import cargoes during the clearance rush.

Sources said that details like just what percentage of the cargoes has been cleared would be made available within next few days.

The clearance drive would not only help lessen congestion at the Karachi Port by making more space available but it is also help the collectorate recover as much as Rs 500 million in stuck-up revenue.
