Custom Court grants bail to suspect in antiques smuggling case

KARACHI: Customs Court Judge Syed Faiz Rasool Rashdi has granted bail to the accused person namely as Saeed Samee who was booked in a case of attempting to smuggle antiques.

During the hearing, counsel for the accused submitted that applicant /accused is innocent and has been falsely implicated in this case; therefore, the court may grant him bail. After the arguments, the court granted him bail against the surety bonds of Rs 200,000.

The judge observed in its order, “Court has considered the arguments advanced on behalf of the parties and have gone through the material available in the record. Record shows that the present applicant/accused had attempted to smuggle the recovered antiques in collusion with his associates. The role of applicant/ accused is yet to be evaluated when the evidence is brought on record during trial, therefore, court granted bail to the accused Saeed Samee subject to furnish solvent surety in the sum of Rs 200,000”.

On last date of hearing, Investigation Officer Shahzad Wasti had produced the above named accused person and requested for further psychical remand; therefore, court had extended customs custody and had directed the Customs Preventive collector for providing medical treatment to the said accused.

According to the prosecution, on a credible information, a team Customs Preventive intercepted the accused Saeed Samee and recovered antiques, one Hanuman (Hindu Mythology) stone size 27×10 inch and female figure (Hindu Mythology) stone size 13×5 inch and others goods from his possession.

After the formalities case was registered by senior official Dilwaris Khan on the violation of Section 2 (s) of the Customs Act, 1969, punishable under clauses 8 & 9 of 156 (I) ibid, read with Section 25, 26 and 27 of Antiquities Act, 1975.
