ISLAMABAD: Using data analysis as one of the tools for border management, the customs authorities can analyze passenger and cargo data to prevent threats before they land at stations. The analytical screening will help in detecting fraud and facilitating legitimate trade, so the data analysis, if done effectively, will also improve customs processor which, in return, will help in reduction of time and increase of clearance capacity at customs stations.
This was stated by Chief Collector North, Sarwat Tahira Habib, while talking to Customs Today on the Customs International Day at Islamabad.
She said the Customs as an organization has substantial clearance data, and web based customs automation has multiplied this data pool manifold which, if analyzed intelligently, can improve border management. She added that coordination with other government agencies and commercially available data can also improve the effectiveness of customs and its border controls.
Answering a query, the chief collector north said we at north region do appreciate that as an enforcement agency, the customs, along with the risk management, needs to analyze obstacles which are present in our system. These obstacles include lack of coordination among different weak IT infrastructure linkage and skilled workers.
