Customs Court sends suspect to jail involved in mobile phones smuggling case

KARACHI: The Customs Court Judge Syed Faiz Rasool Rashdi on Friday sent suspect namely Khuram Ali Raza son of Muhammad Aslam to Central Jail Karachi on judicial remand, who was booked in a case of attempting to smuggle 116 foreign origin mobile phones from Korea to Karachi via Doha by Qatar Airlines.

During the hearing, investigation officer produced above the mentioned suspect before the court and informed that suspect arrived Jinnah International Airport Karachi from Korea via Doha by Qatar Airlines who was intercepted by IPS Green Channel and was asked to declare whether he was carrying any contraband goods in his baggage or on his person, which, he denied.

Investigation officer further informed that during the search, Customs officials recovered 51 LG mobile phones, 09 I-phone, 07 Huawei mobile phones, 45 Samsung mobile phones and 04 Samsung mobile phones valuing to Rs1,322,400 from his baggage, therefore, after the formalities, he was arrested and said goods were seized by customs authorities.

He requested the court that prosecution needs further prosecution from him, therefore, court may send him to customs department on physical remand, after the hearing, however, and court sent him to jail and directed jail authority to produce him on next date of hearing before the court.

Case was registered against him and other yet to be ascertained for violation of section 2 (s), 16 & 139 of the customs act, punishable under clauses (8) (89) & (70) of section 156 (i) ibid, read with baggage rules notified vide SRO-666(I)/2006, dated 28.06,2006 & section 3 (iii) of Import & Export (Control) Act, 1950.
