ISLAMABAD: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has implemented a crucial new security protocol for accessing its IRIS portal, making device registration mandatory for tax consultants and sales tax registered entities.

This measure aims to enhance the security of taxpayer data and prevent unauthorized access to sensitive financial information. Without registering their devices, these users will be unable to access the IRIS system.

This new requirement introduces a straightforward, QR code-based verification process to link a user’s device to their IRIS account, ensuring that only authorized devices can access the portal.

The Device Registration Process: A Step-by-Step Guide

The process for registering your device on the FBR IRIS portal is designed to be quick and user-friendly, primarily involving a QR code scan. Here’s how to do it:

Access the IRIS Portal:

Navigate to the FBR IRIS portal (iris.fbr.gov.pk) and log in with your credentials.

Initiate Device Registration:

Upon successful login, or when attempting to access certain sections, you will likely be prompted with a pop-up window titled “Register Your Device.” This window will present two tabs: “ADD NEW DEVICE” and “REGISTERED DEVICES.” Ensure you are on the “ADD NEW DEVICE” tab.

Scan the QR Code:

The system will display a unique QR code on your screen. You will need to use your smartphone or another mobile device with a QR code scanner (many modern smartphone cameras have this built-in) to scan this code.

Important: Pay attention to the “Time Left” counter. The QR code is typically valid for a limited time (e.g., 5 minutes). If the time expires, you will need to click “RESEND” to generate a new QR code.

QR Verification and Proceed:

After successfully scanning the QR code, your device will be verified by the system. Once the QR verification is complete, click the “PROCEED” button on the IRIS portal screen.

Confirmation (Expected):

The system should then confirm that your device has been successfully registered. You may be redirected to your IRIS dashboard or the section you were trying to access.

Why This Change?

The FBR’s move to mandatory device registration is a significant step towards bolstering the security infrastructure of the IRIS portal. By linking access to specific, registered devices, the FBR aims to:

Prevent Unauthorized Access: Reduce the risk of phishing attempts, credential theft, and unauthorized logins from unknown devices.

Enhance Data Security: Protect sensitive taxpayer information from potential breaches.

Improve Accountability: Ensure that all actions performed on the portal are traceable to a verified user and their registered device.

This new security layer is part of the FBR’s ongoing efforts to modernize its systems and ensure a more secure and reliable environment for taxpayers and tax professionals alike. Users are advised to complete this registration process promptly to avoid any disruption in their access to the IRIS portal.
