ISLAMABAD: Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb has announced that Pakistan’s tax system will be transformed through a faceless system, ending direct interaction between taxpayers and tax officers.

Addressing the National Assembly session on the budget, Aurangzeb said government efforts had yielded results and congratulated Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and the people of Pakistan over the easing of regional tensions.

He said Pakistan had achieved a major milestone by helping prevent war and expressed optimism over the country’s economic progress.

The finance minister said the direction set by the prime minister in the previous budget had contributed to economic stability. He added that industries were operating, the current account had moved into surplus and the export sector was showing improvement.

Aurangzeb highlighted that Pakistan’s information technology exports had increased by 20 percent, reflecting growth in the digital economy.

He said fundamental reforms had been introduced in the tax system, under which the relationship between taxpayers and tax officials would end and be replaced by a transparent faceless mechanism.

Commenting on criticism of the Federal Board of Revenue’s performance, the finance minister said constructive criticism was welcome and would help improve the system.
