NEW YORK: Even though the value of US agriculture exports to Ghana for 2014 has decreased, Ghanaians imported $400,000 worth of dog and cat food, a 74.6 per cent increase from the previous year, according to US government data accessed by ghanabusinessnews.com.
According to trade data from the US Census Bureau, Ghana imported $129.9 million worth of agriculture products from the US in 2014. That, the data says is “a 29 per cent decrease in value as compared to that recorded in 2013. The value in 2013 was $183 million, which was an all-time high in total value of US agricultural exports to Ghana,” it adds.
Ghana primarily imports wheat, rice, poultry and other consumer food products from the US.
Information from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) says Ghana imported $8.9 million worth of soybean meal, prepared food cost the country $2.1 million, while dog and cat food cost Ghana $400,000 in 2014.
Describing this as record high, the USDA says “this is also an indication of growth in export values of 269.9 per cent, 167.9 per cent and 74.6 per cent, respectively, over the values recorded in 2013.”
