DUBLIN: A protracted EU court battle over alleged illegal tax exemptions of €10.9 million granted by Ireland to a metal refinery is set to rumble on after the company launched a new appeal.
Aughinish Alumina, which is owned by the Russian aluminium manufacturer Rusal, has challenged an April EU general court judgment that the European Commission was right to find that state aid granted to the company by Ireland was illegal and had to be paid back.
The government is supporting the appeal, a spokeswoman for the Department of Finance said. The state aid arose from a long-standing exemption from excise.
