KARACHI: The tax lawyers have urged the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) to extend the date of e-filing of income tax returns till December 15 as enormous number of taxpayers is still unable to submit returns, due to IRIS system issues.

In a letter sent to the chairman FBR, Karachi Tax Bar Association (KTBA) President Syed Rehan Hasan Jafferi said that taxpayers were facing immense difficulties in e-filing tax returns, due to system issue. He said that web Portal was literally dead slow till October 31, 2016 therefore the taxpayers were unable to comply on it resulting a huge backlog of tax returns were pending e-filing.

Moreover, he said that now IRIS system was responding better since last 10 to 12 days that led substantial increase in e-filing of tax returns and added that following the huge backlog of tax returns, it appeared to be impossible to complete this pendency in a short span of time.

Keeping this in view, the KTBA has requested the board to extend the date at least up to December 15, 2016 so to facilitate and enable the genuine taxpayers to comply accordingly which was the right of the taxpayer who was voluntarily complying with the statute as a matter of his/her moral/legal obligation, he said.

Moreover, he said that the last date of e-filing of monthly statements under section 165 of the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001 and the payment under the Sales Tax Act, 1990 also fell on November 15, 2016 which may also be considered for an extension accordingly.
