Unemployment in Turkey rises by 0.4% percentage point in January

ANKARA: Unemployment in Turkey rose by 0.4 percentage point in January compared to the previous month, Turkey’s statistical authority has reported.

The number of jobless people rose to 11.3 percent from 10.9 percent in December, reaching 3.2 million – an increase of 454,000 people, Turkstat reported on.

The labor force participation rate (LFPR) was 50 percent, a 1.8 percentage point increase year-on-year, indicating 1.45 million more people were looking for work.

Turkish government officials have repeatedly said that the increase in the labor force participation rate, with the country’s young population reaching working age, shadows the success of the economic administration as the growth of the LFPR outstrips the job creation rate.

The LFPR rate in January was 70.5 percent with a 1.2 percent increase year on year for men, and up 2.3 percent to 29.9 percent for women.
