FORT LAUDERDALE: U.S. Customs and Protection (CBP) Office of Field Operations (OFO) officers working at Port Everglades seized over 615 pounds of cocaine found in five duffel bags during an inspection of a vessel container arriving from Cartagena, Colombia last weekend.
CBP officers were examining containers on board a vessel arriving from Colombia when they discovered five duffel bags of narcotics in one of the containers. The substance tested positive for cocaine and was turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Homeland Security Investigations (HSI). The estimated street value of the drugs is $8.4 million.
“This is an excellent example of the hard work the men and women of CBP exhibit each and every day,” said Port Everglades Port Director Jorge Roig. “Searching thousands of containers is no easy feat but our CBP officers are up for the challenge and we are constantly seeing the results of their hard work.”
U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the lead agency for preventing drug trafficking through airports, seaports, and land ports of entry and plays a significant role in the national drug control strategy. On a typical day in Fiscal Year 2014, CBP seized over 10,000 pounds of drugs.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection operations in Florida include travel and trade facilitation and securing over 1,200 miles of the coastal border.
